ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 77012. Fine engraved nickel ’66 with 20” rnd bbl, full magazine, early style integral front band & sight with 2-position flip rear sight and a staple & ring in left side of receiver. Mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with straight stock & crescent brass buttplate. Serial number is found in top tang channel of buttstock and inside toe of buttplate. Bottom of stock has a sling swivel base. Receiver is very nicely full coverage engraved in Ulrich style with on sides consisting of foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background and beautiful elliptical panels on each side. Top of receiver, top tang, bottom of receiver & bottom tang, along with buttplate tang are engraved to match. There is a small “C” on top of bbl at receiver, the initials “T. C.” on bottom tang, and a small “C” also in toe of buttplate. Lever appears to be a replacement as it is about 1/8” shorter than a ’66 lever and consequently will not engage the latch screw. The panel on left sideplate has lightly scratched initials “MC”. Could this be another Mary Jane Canary (Calamity Jane) firearm? These initials are similar to a set of initials found on a known 1873 Winchester positively identified to Calamity Jane from Red Lodge, Montana. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains 40-50% thin orig nickel with balance a dark patina. Magazine tube retains about 92-93% strong orig nickel with some fine pimpling. Receiver retains about 60% orig nickel with brass showing through worn areas. Lever is mostly a dark patina with about 25% thin nickel. Forearm has a crack in the tip & a replaced section and is missing some chips at the tip. Stock has a replaced section by the top right side of tang and a replaced section at the toe and retains a restored finish. Mechanics are fine, strong dark bore with moderate to heavy pitting.
