*RARE PRESENTATION IBM M-1 CARBINE. SN 3957331. Cal. 30 Carbine. Unusual and rare carbine with 18″ tapered rnd bbl marked “IBM CORP” with winged front sight and standard ramp rear sight. It is mounted in a nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut stock with standard handguard with a small ordnance wheel on the right side of the butt just behind the grip. Right rear side of butt has a 2″ x 1″ pewter plate, recessed and tacked in place, that is inscribed “PRESENTED TO / W.J. NILES / BY / IBM PLANT #4 / AUGUST 1944 / POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.” Accompanied by 1 oxide finished 20-rnd mag and an orig canvas sling & oiler. In keeping with the presentation, this carbine has all the metal polished bright and blued with bright polished bolt and beautifully finished wood. Buttplate is also polished bright. Stock does not have the “P” proof on the grip. Consignor states that Mr. Niles’s family informed him that this was the last M-1 carbine produced by I.B.M. However, information presented on pg 484 of War Baby, Ruth, discloses that the last serial number produced by IBM was serial number 4000999 in May of 1944 when their contract for M-1 Carbines was canceled by the War Department. Also on the same page of the reference publication is a line drawing of the presentation plaque as found on this carbine. The caption reads “Available data indicates that six or more presentation carbines of I.B.M. Manufacturer were given to I.B.M. officials in conjunction with having reached a munitions productions milestone during WWII”. Since this plaque is dated after the cessation of production of carbines at the Poughkeepsie plant it is likely that this presentation to Mr. Niles for work performed during the production period between August 1943 and May 1944, the dates of I.B.M.’s carbine production. According to the reference publication, during this period I.B.M. engineers and plant workers developed numerous new innovations to speed production and save man hours & money. It is likely that Mr. Niles was one of the innovators or possibly a supervisor during this period. From the text of the caption for the plaque in the reference publication it is possible that their may be records of these presentations. CONDITION: Extremely fine. As new, retains virtually all of its fine orig presentation finish with only 1 or 2 extremely minor handling and storage tiny nicks. Hold open detent and spring are missing. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore, probably unfired. 4-39712 JR320 (3,000-5,000)
