ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 35854. Fine engraved Henry by L. D. Nimschke and signed on left side of top tang under the wood. It has 24-1/4” oct bbl with replaced front sight blade and a Henry-style 900 yd. ladder rear sight. Mounted with straight-grain, uncheckered American walnut with straight stock and crescent brass buttplate with trap. Bottom of stock and forend cap have factory sling swivels. Receiver is beautifully Nimschke engraved with a running stag and dog on left sideplate surrounded by Nimschke’s trademark foliate, arabesque patterns with a couple of flower blossoms. Right side has full coverage foliate arabesque patterns, all with fine punch dot background, with small American shield on top of receiver in front of ejection port. Carrier has Nimschke’s trademark flower blossom with punch dot background. Top of receiver, top and bottom tangs, forend cap, and buttplate tang are engraved to match. Receiver, forend cap, and buttplate appear to have been silver-plated. Left side of lower tang has stamped initials “EVV”. Serial number is found in top tang channel of buttstock and inside toe of buttplate. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain about 80% thin orig blue turning plum. Receiver retains about 70% orig silver and forend cap about 98%. Buttplate retains 25-30% orig silver. Forearm has a chip by receiver with a bruise on left side and small nicks & handling marks elsewhere. Buttstock has a tiny chip by top tang with minor nicks & scratches, otherwise wood is sound and retains about all of a restored finish. Lever latch is a replacement.
