*MARHOLDT-PETERLONGO HIGH QUALITY SIDEPLATE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 410. Dainty little shotgun with 27-9/16” bbls choked FULL/FULL with tapered matted rib and single silver bead, dbl lump with dbl bite and ejectors with single trigger. It is on a Merkel style boxlock action with sideplates. Full coverage and wonderfully engraved with a fox and three ducks in a woodland scene on the left side, a setter on point with four partridge in a woodland scene on the right side and two hares in a woodland scene on the trigger plate. Trigger guard bow has a flying woodcock over a marsh scene, all surrounded by extremely fine foliate arabesque and floral patterns. Engraving is also about 1/8” at the chamber end of the bbls and on the foreend iron. Left sideplate is signed “F. JUST”. Stock is nicely figured French walnut with semi-beavertail forearm with 3/4 checkering and a raised triangular shaped tip. Stock has raised side panels with checkered wrist, small European cheekpiece 14-1/4” over a serrated horn buttplate. It has a silver toeplate engraved “JOE GALE” and a tiny European style sling swivel with corresponding swivel on the bbls. SN 958829. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 90-93% fine original blue with some thinning and turning brown near the muzzle and some light spots of rust. Chamber end of the right bbl has a 1” x 1/2” chemical stain, which is turning patina. Right bbl has scattered very fine spots of surface rust. Receiver and sideplates retain most of their original coin finish under a coating of old dried oil. Wood is sound with three dings on the wrist and usual light handling and use marks elsewhere. Forearm is extremely fine. There is a faded area on the comb of the stock that extends down over the cheekpiece. Bores are bright and shiny. 4-48982 JR708 (3,000-5,000)
