*LATE WINCHESTER MODE 97 TRENCH GUN. SN 924825. Cal. 12 ga. 20-7/8″ bbl, 4-row heat shield with bayonet and front sight, bbl markings on left side not covered by heat shield are “L 97-WINCHESTER/ TRADEMARK-12 GA. 2-3/4″ CHAM./CYL.” Top of bbl has WP proof mark and ordinance bomb, right side has series of patent dates. Standard takedown receiver, proof mark forward left side, with Rockwell mark, lower left side “U.S.” and “ORDINANCE BOMB”. Mounted with straight grain walnut, pistol grip, Winchester hard rubber buttplate, inlet base with sling swivel, 4-3/8″ from toe, leather adjustable sling, stamped on inside “MILDEW PROOFED/R.I. ORD CENTER/1945”. Center of left side stock has rectangular box cartouche “W.B.” over a cross-cannon cartouche. PROVENANCE: Alan Brown Coll. CONDITION: Fine. Heat shield retains thinning orig blue, mixing with some brown patina and normal nicks, dings & scratches. Exposed bbl and mag tube retain most of their orig blue with some faint spotting over chamber with some fine surface oxidation. Receiver retains most of its blue finish that appears orig, but may be an arsenal restored finish, markings are crisp with some minor wear at sharp corners, and some minor nicks & dings. Stock is sound with some shallow dents, normal nicks & dings, a 3/8″ gouge on left side of wrist, and a repaired chip at toe running from swivel base back.
