2 BOKHARA ORIENTAL RUGS, TURKESTAN. Circa 1900. The larger, an Afghan example, with four octagonal medallions on a red rust field within indigo and cream latticework within a main border of rectangular panels, each centering a polychrome gul. The second, a Tekke example, with three rows of seven guls, all joined by indigo latticework, within crab and latticework borders, overall with vibrant shades of red, indigo and ivory. SIZE: First: 6’8″ x 3’6″. Second: 4’3″ x 3’6″. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection, by descent from the estate of Caroline Wetmore Davidson Hiles (Warren, Pennsylvania – Brooklyn Heights, New York), to the present owner, a great-grand-daughter. After the death of her second husband, Mrs. Hiles, a suffragette, put her three sons in private schools and spent the rest of her life traveling the world by steamer with her English lady companion, Rose Pasco, and a cockatoo named Van Heemskerk. CONDITION: Both examples with overall general wear and losses to selvage and ends. Fair to good overall. 9-94941 (300-500)
