JOSEPH MORRIS RAPHAEL (American, 1869-1950) LANDSCAPE, FRANCE. Oil on masonite impressionistic scene shows a tall wheat field in the forground looking out over a landscape with buildings and church. Bright pallet with heavy impasto use. Back of masonite is a Vose Galleries label indicating artist and title. Also a label from J.A. Cooling & Sons, London. Front is signed twice. One “Jos Raphael 1911” and the other “Joseph Raphael 1941”. It is our understanding that the painting had some damage and went back to the artist in 1941 and he signed it at that point also. A copy of a letter from Vose Galleries dated 1969 that confirms that the letter’s mother, in which the letter is addressed, had purchased two paintings by Joseph Raphael from Vose Galleries. Housed in a good arts & crafts style carved wood gilt frame. SIZE: 25” x 30”. CONDITION: Very good, inpainting. 9-71747 (10,000-20,000)
