EXCEPTIONAL RENAISSANCE VICTORIAN CARVED WALNUT BREAKFRONT BOOKCASE. Third quarter 19th century. The stepped molded cornice, surmounted in the center by a carved shield crest with a cluster of nuts and fruit, flanked by scrolled and molded elements, above the end sections, and further flanked by large turned finials at the corners above the conforming upper case in three parts, each fitted with an arched glass panel door, opening to adjustable shelves, stepped back on the lower case fitted with three aligned drawers on a molded plinth. SIZE: 8’10” h. x 6’3-1/2″ w. x 2′ d. PROVENANCE: This lovely bookcase was given to the Smiths by the Wingate Cram(?) family. They were members of the Universalist Church and were moving away. They had lived at 41 Broadway, Bangor, Maine. CONDITION: With original finish and dark patina; retains all original carvings and brass hardware; small sections of molding are missing.
