BAROQUE REVIVAL CARVED OAK ARMCHAIR. This finely carved centennial curule-form armchair, a 19th-century reproduction purportedly custom-ordered by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) at the behest of his daughter Mary Emerson Lathrop. The rectangular padded back covered in leather displaying the Emerson family coat of arms, the terminals of the back carved with lion’s masque joined to the square stiles, foliate-carved, the scrolling padded arms terminating in lion masque grips on turned supports, joined to a curule-form saddle seat, covered with embossed leather, the legs joined by lion’s masques, the supports carved in scrolling vinery, terminating in grotesque multi-clawed feet. SIZE: 54″ h. of back x 26″ overall w. PROVENANCE: Chair is accompanied by an old tag reading as follows: “Reproduction of an Emerson family chair in England [and] made for Ralph Emerson. D.E. Wheeler recalls that Ralph Emerson met the owner of the original chair when in Munich with his daughter Mary Emerson Lathrop.” Presumably the chair continued by descent through the Lathrop family to recent times. CONDITION: Chair retains original finish with very good patina, the frame structurally intact, one piece of carving absent proper left side stretcher. Leather back including decorated and gilt crest restorable, fabric on arm rests absent. Embossed leather saddle seat severely torn. 9-95371 (1,000-1,500)
