*OUTSTANDING SPRINGFIELD NRA MODEL 1903 BOLT ACTION RIFLE. SN 624198. Cal. 30-06. Usual configuration with 24″ bbl marked “SA / 4-16” with flaming bomb in center. It has orig front sight with sheet metal sight hood and Buffington rear sight. Mounted in a full length 1-pc walnut stock with grasping grooves and “J.S.A.” cartouche in a rectangle on left side. Bottom of stock has “P” proof in circle and has checkered buttplate with trap. It has long upper handguard with split front band/bayonet lug with stacking swivel and a grooved middle band with sling loop and a corresponding sling loop in buttstock. Trigger guard and floorplate are bright polished blue with the trigger guard front tang stamped with an ordnance corps flaming bomb over “N.R.A.” This marking is pictured on page 393 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy. These rifles, so marked, were available only through the National Rifle Association and apparently very few were ever ordered as they are rarely encountered today. Bottom of bbl, under the forestock, is stamped with what may be a star gauge mark “D17 /3”. Bbl, under the forestock and handguard, is still covered in cosmoline. CONDITION: Extremely fine plus. Overall retains about all of its fine orig armory finish to both metal and wood with only slight sharp edge wear. Wood has a minor bruise or two and a very few, very small, nicks and scratches. Cut-off retains most of its orig case colors, moderately faded. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-39737 JR321 (2,000-3,000)
