*RARE SELECT SERVICE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 BOLT ACTION RIFLE. SN 1241647. Cal. 30-06. Standard issue configuration 1903 with 24″ bbl marked “SA / 3-22” below front sight with a flaming bomb in the middle and standard chamber markings on receiver. Bottom of muzzle crown is stamped with a tiny star gauge star and top of bbl under the handguard, just above rear sight, has the star gauge number “5613”. Mounted in nicely figured, 1-pc uncheckered American walnut stock with full length handguard that has a crisp “W.J.S.” cartouche in a rectangle on left side of wrist. It has standard split front band/bayonet lug with stacking swivel and grooved lower band with sling loop and a corresponding sling loop in buttstock. Buttplate is checkered with a trap containing a nickeled brass tube/oiler/cleaning kit. Bottom of stock has the “P” proof in a circle below trigger guard. These rare rifles were the “poor man’s” National Match rifle in that they had selected & fitted parts and star gauged bbls but were not completed as National Match rifles. This rifle is listed by SN on p. 210 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy, and is identified as a Model “SS” (Special Service). It also lists bbl date and star gauge number. Page 201 of the referenced publication shows that only 100 of these special target rifles were produced in 1922. Given their exact confirmation to standard 1903 service rifles, if one should miss the star gauge on the muzzle there is no way to distinguish them from a standard issue rifle and therefore the vast majority of these rare rifles, more rare than National Match, have gone unnoticed and unidentified. This rifle may be the only documented Special Service rifle known. PROVENANCE: Bob Rosenthal Collection. CONDITION: Extraordinarily fine, as new. Has been fired but very little. Overall retains 98-99% of its orig armory finish to both metal & wood with only some thinning on front band. Wood is sound showing light hand wear. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-39219 JR8 (4,500-6,500)
