*RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 SPORTER NATIONAL MATCH. SN 1369100. Cal. 30-06. Sporting configuration National Match with 24″ bbl marked “SA / 3-38” below front sight. Muzzle crown is stamped with the star gauge star and top of bbl is stamped with the star gauge number “B4320” under handguard, above rear sight. Front sight is a slightly modified standard blade and rear sight is a 2,700 yard Buffington sight. Receiver has usual markings with polished rails and polished bolt body that has the full SN in electric pencil. Trigger guard and floorplate are standard issue machined steel. Mounted in the NRA style 1-pc half stock with pistol grip and checkered semi-crescent steel buttplate. Right side of stock is not cut for the Lyman 48 receiver sight and rear receiver bridge is not drilled & tapped for this sight. Forestock is without grasping grooves with bbl channel having been inletted to accommodate the rear sight sleeve. Top of bbl has a tiny handguard mortised into rear sight sleeve and secured by the grooved bbl band. Page 198 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy, pictures a target fired by this rifle, identified by SN, fired from machine rest at 220 yards and signed “FAW” which is the signature of shop foreman Al Woodworth. Mr. Woodworth was one of the most important employees at the Springfield Armory for many years, participating in the development of numerous rifle programs and equipment, especially those involving accuracy. The date on the target appears to be Aug. 10, 193-. Accompanied by a Springfield Research Service letter identifying this rifle as a Model 1903A1 National Match and was shipped to the “Adjutant General’s Office/Hartford, Conn.” on Sept. 13, 1934. Also accompanied by a copy of the Springfield Record. Apparently this rifle was returned to Springfield Armory, re-barreled and fitted with the NRA Sporter stock and handguard. PROVENANCE: Bob Rosenthal Collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Overall retains 98-99% strong orig armory finish to both metal & wood with only light muzzle edge wear on bbl and slight edge wear on receiver. Trigger guard & floorplate have some slight surface discoloration with minor sharp edge wear. Handguard has a small internal crack near front band, otherwise wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks and retains most of its Armory oil finish with a hand worn patina.
