IVORY FIGURE OF A SCHOLAR. Ming Dynasty, early 1600’s. A wonderful example of one of China’s earliest ivories carved soon after China started importing ivory. The scholar is seen holding one foot up at knee level with fingers pointed down. He holds a fruit branch between teeth and is set on a wood plinth. Nice patina. SIZE: Overall 10-1/2″ h; figure is 9″ h. PROVENANCE: Private collection of Dr. & Mrs. Winfield Gibbs, Sunbury, PA; Ashkenazi Auction, 2/1/90. CONDITION: The back has two small holes which have been filled, otherwise very good. 9-92278 (5,000-7,000)
