*EXTREMELY RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 NBA SPORTER BOLT ACTION RIFLE. SN 1269085. Cal. 30-06. Nearly identical to the standard NRA Sporter with 24″ tapered rnd bbl marked “SA / 5-25” with a flaming bomb in center just below front sight. Crown of muzzle is stamped with star gauge star and bottom of bbl, under the forestock is stamped with the star gauge number “B1143”. Receiver has standard 1903 markings with polished bolt body & extractor and is mounted with a Lyman 48S receiver sight. Mounted in the rare NBA Sporter half stock with grasping grooves in forestock and an unusual flat bottom pistol grip with checkered buttplate with trap containing a nickeled brass tube/oiler/cleaning kit. Forestock is secured with a sgl grooved band that has a sling loop with corresponding sling loop in buttstock. Bottom of wrist has the “P” in a circle proof. Trigger guard and floorplate are standard issue milled steel with polished blue. This rifle is listed by SN on p. 210 of the book The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy, with bbl date shown as “5-24”, obviously a typographical error as the star gauge number “B1443” is also listed. Page 215 of the referenced publication pictures this rifle, both sides, and has a brief description which states that only 589 of this variation of the NRA Sporter was produced in 1926. Accompanied by a Springfield Research Service letter which identifies this rifle as a “Rifle, U.S. Caliber .30, Sporting Model”, sold by “Springfield Armory, Mass.” to “Capt. H.M. Bullard, Medical Corp/Philadelphia, PA” on Sept. 16, 1925. Also accompanied by a copy of the Springfield Armory record. PROVENANCE: Bob Rosenthal Collection. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Overall retains 97-98% strong orig armory finish to both metal and wood with only slight muzzle and front sight wear with some thinning over chamber area and a few light spots of discoloration on floorplate. Wood has four small bruises on right side of buttstock and other light handling & storage marks, otherwise is sound with strong orig armory oil finish.
