OVERSIZED HEAD OF BLACK CHILD WITH CLOCKWORK EYES. During the first half of the 20th century the use of children for advertising commercial products was the norm. From using the Gold Dust Twins for selling the soap powder to the Dionne Quintuplets virtually selling every baby product imaginable, this particular clockwork piece manufactured in Germany in the earlier part of the 20th century featured a young black boy, maybe 8-10 years of age, with parted lips and showing his teeth and tongue. When the mechanism is wound his eyes dart about the room from left to right. He has a most appealing and endearing look about him. SIZE: 12″ t. CONDITION: The plaster/papier mache head is in great original condition. Left hand might have had an aged repair to fingers. Clothing appears newer but appropriate. 1-11323 (1,500-2,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Fall 2011 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
