HANNA BROWN SKEELE (American, 1829-1901) LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL. Outstanding oil on canvas portrait of a young girl with blue eyes and blond hair. She wears a fancy lace edged white dress with a blue printed scarf at waist and a small gold and black enameled bar pin. She is seated with arm resting on her eagle decorated red and gold drum and holding a drumstick. The edge of a picture book is seen below the drum. Her legs are tucked under her and off to the side and a colorful Victorian carpet can be seen. Housed in its fine period gesso decorated gilt frame. Signed lower left “HB Skeele”. The back stretcher retaining its original Fine Arts Store label of Cyrus F. Davis, Portland, Maine. SIZE: 27″ x 22″. CONDITION: Very good with minor touch up. 9-97126 (4,500-5,500)
