CHINESE SILK EMBROIDERED DRESSING SCREEN. Mid-19th century. The four-panel screen intricately woven with pairs of exotic birds flying amongst flowering branches above a fanciful pond, beneath which one sees aquatic plants and koi fish, bordered within a scrolling cartouche of silver thread and further bordered by spandrels of wisteria, peonies, ferns, and anemones, all on coffee-colored ground. The reverse covered in textured paper. SIZE: 62-1/2″ h. x 23″ w. (each panel). PROVENANCE: From a fine Beacon Hill and Thomaston estate. CONDITION: Colors remain soft and rich with developing weaknesses in the silk threading of the water surface and some of the flowers in the area of the koi. The silk foundation has lateral tears in the first and third panels, just below the midpoint. Another small tear in the third panel foundation beneath the borders. Wonderful screen worthy of restoration. 9-93580 (1,500-2,500)
