*RARE, POSSIBLY EARLIEST KNOWN SPRINGFIELD MODEL M1922 BOLT ACTION GALLERY PRACTICE RIFLE. SN 20. Cal. 22. Very rare first issue M1922 with 24″ tapered rnd bbl marked “SA / 4-22” with a flaming bomb in middle below front sight. Receiver has standard markings and is mounted with a Lyman 48S receiver sight. Bolt body & handle are polished bright and firing pin is the early type with dual firing pins and has standard shroud with headless striker. Trigger guard & floorplate are machined steel with an orig, extended M1922 magazine with reinforced bottom. Mounted in a 1-pc uncheckered walnut half-stock with grasping grooves and pistol grip and checkered semi-crescent steel buttplate. Forestock is secured with a sgl grooved band with sling loop and a corresponding sling loop in buttstock. This is possibly the earliest known M1922. It is pictured on p. 273 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy, and is identified by SN. Page 275 of the referenced publication has a 3-position view of this rifle in which the SN is also visible. Only 2,020 of these scarce rifles were produced at Springfield in the period 1922-24 and the vast majority of that number was subsequently converted to the M1 and M2 versions with updated bolts, firing pins and strikers. Very few remain today in orig configuration. PROVENANCE: Bob Rosenthal Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl & receiver retain 85-88% orig, thinning Armory blue with bolt body still bright. Trigger guard retains about 80% bright orig blue with the floorplate a gray/brown patina. Stock is sound with light handling & use marks and retains most of its orig Armory oil finish. Magazine is flaked, not worn to about 60% orig blue with flaked areas a medium to dark patina. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with a few spots just in front of chamber. 4-39209 JR13 (7,500-10,000)
