RARE 40″ STORE DISPLAY SCHOENHUT BROWNIE “MILLIONAIRE DUDE”. Palmer Cox was the creator of the mythical Brownie figures, which had enormous popularity in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many companies such as Hubley, McLoughlin, Schoenhut, etc. created Brownie toys. It is highly unlikely that this particular piece was created for a child. More likely it was used in a store window as a display or “attention getting” purposes. Schoenhut created a series of various figures including Uncle Sam, the Chinaman, the Indian, the Millionaire Dude, etc. In an 1895 display they featured the various Brownies in their booth. At one point in time the Cliff House in San Francisco had a selection of these Brownies on display as well, but unfortunately they were dispersed and no one seems to know what happened to these figures. It appears that most, if not all, of these Brownies were enhanced and/or redressed probably during the 1940s or 50s. These are rare figures and seldom found. This particular Brownie is known as the “Millionaire Dude”. He had been in a private collection from the Midwest for many years. SIZE: 40″ h with hat. CONDITION: Body and head are in excellent condition considering their age and frailty. As mentioned above, paint and clothing enhancement/restoration. 8-87681 (5,500-7,500)
