*LOT OF ERLE STANLEY GARDNER & RAYMOND BURR SMITH & WESSON REVOLVERS. (1) Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chief’s Special DA Revolver. Cal. 38 Spcl. SN 133347. Blue finish, 1-7/8″ bbl, and flat latch with smooth silver medallion rosewood grips. The sideplate is factory engraved “Erle Stanley Gardner” in script with a flourish of arabesque pattern. It is accompanied by its orig Chinese red 2-pc box with wiping rod & orig oiled paper. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Retains 96-97% strong bright orig extra polish blue with minor muzzle & sharp edge wear and a small scrape on the top strap. Grips are equally fine. Good mechanics, bright shiny bore and very little use. Box is fine. (2) Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 29 DA Revolver. Cal. 44 Magnum. SN S172300. It has blue finish with 6-1/2″ ribbed bbl, red ramp & white outline sites, target trigger & hammer and diamond checkered silver medallion magnum grips. The sideplate is factory engraved in block letters “RAYMOND BURR” with a small flourish of arabesque patterns. Its orig, blue, satin-lined, black, leatherette case with tools and instruction pamphlet accompany it. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. Appears to be new & unfired with only a faint cylinder line. Appears to have extra polish blue. Accompanied by a variety of correspondence relating to both revolvers including two from John Bianchi regarding the Chief’s Special, one of which states that it was presented to him by his good friend, Marshall Sam Hicks of Temecula, CA. Mr. Hicks was an author and friend of Mr. Gardner who gave Mr. Hicks this revolver before he passed away. Mr. Bianchi with this letter, was presenting this revolver to Roy Jinks. In the letter Mr. Bianchi states that this is a factory engraved gun and was a special factory presentation to Mr. Gardner in 1958 as is listed in the factory records. The Raymond Burr revolver is accompanied by a Smith & Wesson Factory letter, which fully identifies it and states that it was shipped June 14, 1957 to Walter Lookabaugh of Los Angeles, CA and that it was engraved “RAYMOND BURR” when it left the factory. Another letter, from the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, CA, states that Smith & Wesson gave this revolver to Mr. Burr in honor of his Perry Mason and Ironsides series and that it was engraved with his name. Another letter from the law school shows that Raymond Burr donated this revolver. There are several additional letters, photographs of Mr. Burr, Erle Stanley Gardner and Mr. Burr with various members of his casts. There is an autographed framed color photograph of Mr. Burr and Barbara Hale. Finally there is a silver-plated cigarette box with a letter from Gardner’s widow, 7-1/8″ x 3-3/4″ x 1-7/8″, which is inscribed on the lid, “Erle Stanley Gardner / from / Edward J. Donovan / Aug. 1939”. Box is in fine condition with light scratches and wear. 4-53881 (15,000-25,000)
