WILLIAM ZORACH (American, 1887-1966) “THE ARTIST’S DAUGHTER”. Terracotta Signed on back of figure “Zorach” with a number that is illegible, also a raised signature “Zorach” on square base. NOTE: Zorach did a number of sculptures of his young daughter in terracotta, marble & bronze castings. Terracotta has long been held in a position of esteem with Europeans, as it molded in the hands of the artist and is the closest to the artist’s spontaneous impression. In comparing the various sculptures of Zorach’s daughter, Dahlov, done in roughly a several year period, this particular work seems to resonate with more personal feeling & character than the others. SIZE: Overall: 15″ H x 6″ W x 4-1/2″ D. PROVENANCE: Acquired by Emile Arnold directly from the artist; Consigned to Swann’s in 2000 by Arnold’s descendants to our consignor. CONDITION: Very good. 9-29413 (6,000-10,000)
