WINKWORTH ALLEN GAY (American, 1821-1910) “OLD ORCHARD BEACH”, MAINE. Oil on board beach scene shows a team of four-oxen pulling a two-wheel wagon filled with seaweed with a man seated on a log beside. The wide beach has a small tidal river which cuts the beach and empties into the crashing waves. A man and daughter are seen walking along the edge and an island can be seen in the distance. A well executed sky with puffy white clouds and blue sky. Signed lower right “W Allen Gay 1876”. Also signed on reverse “Old Orchard Beach W Allen Gay 1873″. Housed in what appears to be a fine unsigned Guido Frame Studio gilt gesso decorated antique fluted cove frame. The back having a Vose Galleries label. SIZE: 12″ x 19”. PROVENANCE: A McLean, Virginia private collection. CONDITION: Craquelure, minor touch up, very good. 9-99699 (5,000-7,000)
