JAMES EMERY (American, 1819-1899) ROCK SENTINEL. Oil on canvas evening scene shows a rock cliff coastline with point having a tall rock monolith. A sailboat sails left to right away from the rock. All under a beautiful sky from amethyst to gold and yellow. Possible light signature to bottom left but illegible. Housed in a modern gilt molded wood frame. Back of canvas has a M. J. Whipple’s Boston canvas stamp. Modern pen inscription on back indicates purchased at auction at the Westbrook Armory, Maine in the early 1980’s. SIZE: 24″ x 18″. CONDITION: Restored, craquelure, good. 9-99544 (500-1,000)
