J.T.W. (American, 19th Century) ALONG THE MAINE COAST. Outstanding oil on canvas coastal scene shows large waves crashing onto cliff side shoreline surmounted with evergreens. The foreground showing a sandy beach at the base of rock cliffs with a small rowboat. Storm clouds with a light break in right corner casting light on the front of the crashing wave. A flock of seagulls fly towards viewer. Signed lower right “J.T.W. 1870”. Housed in its original lemon gold period frame. The back stretcher having a pencil inscription which may be a previous owner “G A Leavitt”. SIZE: 18″ x 30″. CONDITION: Very good with some inpainting. 9-99552 (1,500-3,000)
