NEW ENGLAND SILK ON LINEN SAMPLER OF SALLY “SHEPLEAFED”, JULY 7, 1811. Wrought with three rows of alphabet in capital and lower case above a line of Arabic numerals in dark brown followed by two rows of the alphabet in script followed by four lines of verse which read “Youth’s the springtime of our years/Short the rapid end appears/Let’s improve the fleeting hours/Virtue’s noblest fruits be ours” stitched in shades of light blue and brown followed by a line stitched with her name and date the quilt was completed. The bottom a pictorial line of a fruit tree flanked by a flower stem and a tree full of birds all within a zigzag border further surrounded by a zigzag and acorn border in blue and cream silk, all within a S-scrolled outer border. SIZE: Sight: 18-3/4″ x 16″. PROVENANCE: From the private collection of Dorothy-Lee Jones. CONDITION: The linen ground with overall staining from acid backing resulting in overall fading of silk threads in tones of brown. 9-23200 (500-800)
