RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1863 MUSKET WITH WHITNEY EAGLE ON STOCK. Cal. 58. NSN. 40” part oct bbl. “ESA” and “GWS” cartouches on left side of stock. Large eagle over “WHITNEY ARMS CO” on the stock. Eli Whitney, Jr., purchased condemned parts from the armories and other contractors and turned them into saleable arms. These can usually be identified by the slight changes made to the orig, in this case, the bluing of the bbl, bbl band, trigger guard, and buttplate. They were marked lightly with the Whitney name, but this is often missing. CONDITION: Fine. About 50% of the Whitney finish remaining. Wood is fine except for gouges across lockplate area, which possibly led to its condemnation in the first place. Strong traces of casehardening colors remaining on lockplate and hammer. Mechanically fine. Edwards Collection 4-58448 (2,500-3,500)
Auction: Firearms - Fall 2006 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
