**RARE & COLLECTIBLE COLT MODEL 1914 “POTATO DIGGER” MACHINE GUN ONCE OWNED BY STEMBRIDGE GUN RENTALS (CURIO & RELIC).

SN 14180. Cal. .30-06. 29″ bbl. Fine example of the early United States Browning “Digger” machine gun in its refined form as mfg. by Colt as Model of 1914. Large dia bbl, wood grips and comes on a scarce and desirable orig brass head tripod. Colt “digger” acquired its name due to the large operating lever that reciprocates upon firing arching downward and moving back and forth from each shot as the gas is expelled from the cyl. When placed close to the ground, this lever would dig a hole into the ground, hence the name digger. Matching numbers between receiver and bbl are the only visible external SNs. When pulled to the rear, the actuating arm number SN is visible which also matches. Two right hand receiver sideplate screws are not present, however this does not affect function. Tripod retains its orig leather leg strap. This is a National Firearms Act item and requires BATF approval prior to transfer. This weapon is fully transferable on an ATF form 3 or form 4 as Curio & Relic eligible. Included is orig STEMBRIDGE GUN RENTALS INC receipt indicating that this gun identified by SN was provided to Columbia Pictures Inc where it would’ve been used in motion pictures. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine to very fine. Orig blued finish turning a pleasing brown patina on sideplates, bbl and grip frame with very fine to extremely fine lustrous blue finish on rear portion of receiver. Top of sight and muzzle area as well as lower portions of sideplate turning an even gray patina. Mechanics are fine Bore is also fine with bright rifling. Tripod exhibits about 70% orig painted finish with front legs turned a brown patina. Wooden brace completely intact and in fine, serviceable condition. Early American machine guns command a premium and this one with its added film history provenance is an especially desirable specimen. 53213-1 JWK (8,000-15,000) C&R – Lot 1054
