ALEXANDER HENRY “BEST” BOXLOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE ENGRAVED IN “FRUITING VINE” STYLE WITH CROCODILE LEATHER CASE AND MANY ACCESSORIES.SN 6865. Cal. .500 BPE. 28″ Dovetailed Damascus bbls are fitted with full length rib with dolls head extension holding one standing, one folding leaf U-notch rear sight and silver bead front. Central portion is engraved “Alexr Henry Ltd Edinburgh and London.” “Makers to Their Royal Highness’ The Prince of Wales and Duke of Edinburgh”. Tops of bbls are engraved “Made For R. D. Rodda & Co” and “7 & 8 Dalhousie Square, Calcutta”. Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs, SN, and “A.H”. A wide sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Case hardened boxlock action features automatic safety (SAFE in blue enamel), sliding third fastener, disc set strikers, and double triggers. Action is engraved with near full coverage William Morris arts and crafts inspired fruiting vine pattern with nicely shaded grape leaves and grape clusters sprouting from trailing vines. This unusual treatment extends to fences where leaves and vines are cut in deep relief, as well as trigger guard which has SN on tang. Lightly marbled dense stump figured European walnut trap steel capped pistol grip buttstock with beaded shadow line right hand cheekpiece, drop points, and point pattern checkering measures 14-1/4″ over orig Silver pad. A sling loop matching that on bbls, as well as a vacant gold oval, are on toe line. Matching splinter Deeley ejector forend has forward pivoting lever release. Drop at heel: approx 2-3/4″, drop at comb: approx 2″. Cast: approx 1/4 off. Weight: 8 lbs. 15 oz. LOP: 14-1/4″. Rifle is housed in its orig oak and crocodile leather case, with brass corners. Top of case is gold embossed “500 GAUGE” “CHARGE 5-1/4 Drs” on left and “RIFLE No 6865” “BULLET 440 Grn”. Case is lined in deep red velvet, and has gold embossed black leather Henry Ltd label in lid. Bottom compartment is semi-French fitted for a number of orig cleaning and reloading accessories, including steel mold SNed to this rifle, with hollow pointing and round nosed pins also stamped with SN. Also included are German silver powder measure, sizing die, and a bullet fixer. Other equipment includes Hawksley marked round pewter oil bottle, ebony and German silver 2-pc cleaning rod, along with some attachments and the orig key. CONDITION: Very good to fine, original, “as found”. Bbls retain 60 – 70% orig Damascus finish, considerably silvered from normal hand wear. Action retains a considerable amount orig case hardening color; 15 – 25% orig blue remains on floorplate and trigger guard. Stocks retain most of their orig oil finish, and have not seen any added oil. Checkering is lightly worn, considerably so on bottom of forend from normal hand wear. Bores are very fine, strong rifling throughout, shiny, but with scattered pits and frosting. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Movement felt with forend removed. Ejectors are slightly out of time. Case leather is good, with numerous scuffs and rubs on edges. Interior cloth is good with considerable marking and some rubs through from contact with rifle and accessories, which are very good to fine. Donald Dallas in ALEXANDER HENRY RIFLE MAKER lists this rifle as number “2” of a pair of 500 bore A&D ejector rifle completed in January 1895. 53191-3 MGM (17,500-27,500) – Lot 1170
