VERY RARE SMALL BORE CHARLES LANCASTER FOUR BARREL HAMMERLESS GAME SHOTGUN.

SN 5159. Cal. 20 ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. A few of these interesting guns were made in the 1880’s and built on the same rotating firing mechanism used in the more common, but still very rare Lancaster four bbl pistols. This gun has 28-1/4″ four Damascus bbl cluster fitted with swamped game rib with dolls head extension. Rib is engraved “Charles Lancaster 151 New Bond Street London. Patent Four Barrel Breech Loading Hammerless Gun”. Sides of top bbls and bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Round bodied Jones underlever action with tall breechface, has safety lever on top strap. Action looks like a boxlock; it is however a trigger plate type action with rotating internal hammer which is indexed and cocked by pulling the large rear trigger with middle finger. When this “trigger” is held in back, gun is then fired using the front trigger which has checkered finger blade. Action has geometric border engraving. Both sides are also engraved “Charles Lancaster’s Patent” “London”. Trigger guard with very large bow, has SN engraved on top where covered by underlever when gun is closed. Well marbled and nicely figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over old Silver type pad. Widely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip and a vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter forend has spring tension roller catch. Bore diameter: top left -.615, bottom – .616. Bore restrictions: top – .004 (IC), bottom – .005 (IC). Wall thickness: top – .022, bottom – .023. Bore diameter: top right -.616, bottom right- .616. Bore restrictions: top – .004 (IC), bottom left – .004 (IC). Wall thickness: top – .022, bottom – .022. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Cast: approx 1/4 off. Weight: 7 lbs. 11 oz. LOP: 14-3/4″. PROVENANCE: The prestigious personal collection of 4-time Oscar-winning Visual Effects Icon, Richard Edlund. CONDITION: Very good to fine, as partially refinished. Bbls retain over 90% traditional re-brown finish with very good definition to Damascus pattern. Action is nearly all smooth gray to brown patina. Stocks refinished over some light marks. Newer pad is a bit squished, checkering lightly re-cut. Bores are very fine to excellent, shiny, with some scattered light pitting. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. 53184-7 MGM (20,000-30,000) – Lot 1238
