UNUSUAL ROLLING BLOCK SINGLE SHOT 4 BORE “CANARDIER” WATERFOWLING GUN BY DARNE.

SN 127. Cal. 4 bore. 48″ Tapered round bbl is fitted with block in front of forend for attachment of pintel for boat rail mount. Breech end is stamped with 2012 London black powder proofs. Unusual large action with rolling block and attached pivoting bolt with long handle which gives extremely secure locking to breech, is marked “DARNE A. ST. ETIENNE” on rolling block. SN is stamped in many places on action. Trigger guard has exceptionally large bow to accommodate gloved hand. Straight grip buttstock of lightly figured European walnut has point pattern checkering at grip, and measures 13-5/8″ over steel buttplate. Matching forend screws to bbl. Bore diameter at muzzle: .853. Bore restrictions: considerable choke is visible. Weight: 14 lbs. 3 oz. LOP: 13-5/8″. Included with gun are 6 4-bore paper cases by Gevelot of Paris. PROVENANCE: Darne booklet (1909 reproduction), a similar gun shown on p. 68. Copy of DGJ article issue 3, Fall 2015, describing this particular gun. Consignors notes. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains most of its orig blue. Action retains 20 – 30% blue, the balance heavily flaked to brown. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish over a number of marks, both light and heavy.
