This revolver is documented on pg 236 of Colt’s Double Action Revolver Model of 1878, by Don Wilkerson as being shipped with 10 other guns on August 7, 1880. This agrees with the Colt factory letter that accompanies this revolver. The revolver shipped to Benjamin Kittredge Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is credited with coining the name and had this name etched on left side of bbl of double action revolvers sold by his firm. These revolvers are among the most sought after by collectors today. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains 80% orig nickel finish with some muzzle wear and staining. Marking is sharp, etched panel is completely legible. Ejector rod housing retains 20% nickle with some staining on outer edge. Frame retains 30% orig nickel finish that has flaked to a smooth grey/brown patina, especially at the rear. Trigger guard retains 50% orig nickel. All frame markings are sharp and clear. Hammer shows considerable fire blue on top and back. Trigger retains a generous amount of fire blue in protected areas. Cyl shows 30% orig nickel finish with balance flaked to a smooth grey/brown patina. Markings are sharp. Grips are very good, intact and exhibit a fiery mellow yellow patina. Screws retain generous traces of blue. Mechanics need attention. Hammer does not stay on half-cock; double action trigger pull functions. A chance to buy one of the rarest Colt double action revolvers extant which would be a wonderful addition to any double action collection. 53126-1 TEP (5,750-6,750) – Lot 3025
