SIGNED JOHN MOLL JR. ALLENTOWN, LEHIGH COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA RIFLE.SN NA. Overall Length is 59-1/2″, butt dimensions are 1 3/8″ Wide x 4″ High. This rifle has a 43 5/8″ full octagon signed smooth bore .45 caliber barrel. Rifle has John Moll’s traditional two-piece fleur-de-lis brass patch box, a typical Lehigh County sheath type butt, trigger guard with stud forward of the bow, brass nose cap notched for ramrod and heavy brass arrow back side plate. The very small cheek piece is typical of John Moll’s rifles. “London Warranted” flint lock appears to be original flint. Stock profile displays a slight second radius beginning at the end flange of the trigger guard, desirable in Lehigh County guns. Stock is hand striped and retains much of its original red finish and striping. The Moll family of gunsmiths was unique in that they signed the vast majority of their guns while a great number of gunsmiths did not. Much has been written about the famous Moll family of gunsmiths who were active in and around the Allentown area for over a hundred years from before the Revolution until almost the end of the 19th century. The first John (Johannas) Moll is listed in tax records in 1764. Johannas had a son John Jr. born in 1773 who carried on his father’s business on North 7th Street in Allentown during and after the War of 1812. CONDITION: Clean and sound throughout. Hand striping shows minimal normal wear. Black light inspection shows no indication of any fore end wood replacement. Very Good overall. 53105-4 RGG (8,500-11,000) – Lot 3147
