STELLAR CONDITION COLT 1877 LIGHTNING REVOLVER WITH PICTURE BOX.

SN 16894. Cal. 38. 3-1/2″ bbl. Nickel finish overall with niter blue appointments inclusive of screws, hammer, trigger and store keeper pattern cylinder pin. Two-piece Rampant Colt hard rubber checkered grips. Manufactured in 1880 and verified by SN this variation being manufactured without ejector rod housing or assembly and marked with vivid etched panel bbl marking denoting “COLT D.A. 38”. Traditional and appropriate 2-line Colt bbl address on top of bbl and 3-line patent markings on left side of frame flat. Factory marked on left rear of trigger guard “38 CAL”. Housed in the desirable authentic Colt picture box with appropriate labels denoting “COLT D.A. PISTOL RUBBER NICKEL 3-1/2 38” with appropriate secondary label indicating without ejector. These extremely rare and desirable picture boxes have an unbelievably low survival rate as they were manufactured of cardboard and paper and after nearly 140 years are seldom encountered. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Excellent overall with minimal traces of finish wear at leading edges of cylinder and extreme high points of recoil shield. This gun obviously spent its life in this box as little to no evidence of actual use is present. All 6 chambers still retain their nickel finish internally. Bore is bright and sharp as is to be expected. Two piece hard rubber grips are extremely fine and are numbered to match on internal side of right grip. Most all screws are excellent retaining virtually all of their niter blue finish with exception of forward trigger guard screw having been removed using an ill fitting screwdriver. Action & mechanics function properly and crisply. These 1877 pattern revolvers were notorious for getting out of working order, however this example being near new has none of those issues. Factory picture box is equally fine with an outstanding vivid picture top label. Very small areas of material loss which are to be expected are at the extreme edge of this label but in no way detract from its appearance. Both end labels are vivid, bright and clean. Edges of box have typical wear and two corners of the lid have become lose, however spine is intact. 53094-19 TDW (6,500-8,000) – Lot 2255
