US MODEL 1862 NAVAL OFFICER’S CUTLASS.This particular example is shown as Figure 141, pg 163 in Harold L. Peterson’s 1954 scholarly text The American Sword. He notes this is a variant with floral decorations and same U.S.N. cutout in basket. These same swords were offered by Bannerman as early as 1905 and are thought possibly to be of post-war manufacture. Sword is marked on one ricasso “U.S.N. / D.R / 1862”. Cutlass still retains it’s leather grip and twisted wire which is almost always missing. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. 26-1/4″ blade is grey with staining and light pinprick pitting. Ames marking is not discernible, though inspector’s marks are as noted. Brass is a mixed mustard patina. Capstan rivet is brass. Rack numbers are found on top of quillon. 53094-156 JS (2,500-3,000) – Lot 2292 Click here to view provenance
