IMPRESSIVE BRITISH RIFLE SHOOTING TROPHY PRESENTED BY JOSEPH HOULT, ESQUIRE M.P., OXTON RIFLE CLUB, 1902 CHALLENGE CUP.Massive 29″ tall sterling marksman trophy, weighing 130 troy ounces, two-handled loving cup with lid with a 5″ finial in the shape of a British soldier in field gear wearing Anzac hat. Presentation reads “OXTON RIFLE CLUB / CHALLENGE CUP / PRESENTED BY / JOSEPH HOULT, ESQ. M.P. / MEMBER FOR THE WIRRAL DIVISION OF CHESHIRE / TO / ENCOURAGE THE ART OF / RIFLING SHOOTING / 1902”. Joseph Hoult (1847-1917) was a British ship owner from Liverpool, a member of the Conservative Party who sat in the House of Commons from 1900-1906. PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Very good overall. In-polish with several professionally repaired dents. British silver proofs and makers mark engraved on base “Campbell & Lumby, Silversmiths, Liverpool”.
