*”BEST” SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME SHOTGUN BY JOHN WILKES WITH VERY FINE SCROLL AND UNUSUAL MULTI-COLORED GOLD AND SILVER INLAY WITH ITS CASE AND LABEL.SN 15222. Cal. 12 ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 28″ Chopper lump bbls are gold inlaid “John Wilkes.” and engraved “79, Beak Street. London. W1” on narrow swamped game rib. Bbl flats are stamped with 1985 London nitro proofs. Case hardened sidelock action is stocked to the fences and features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved with 70% coverage nicely cut small scroll with rose bouquet highlights, within scroll borders. This scroll surrounds interesting scenes of game birds with engraved backgrounds highlighted by flush gold vegetation. This treatment accents relief inlaid silver birds; a pair of grouse are in highland setting on left side, partridges in field on right side, and pair of pheasant in woodland clearing on bottom of action. “John Wilkes” is in gold on each lockplate. Single beaded trigger guard with rose and scroll on bow has SN in gold on tang. Marbled and burl figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15-3/8″ over checkered wood butt, and features classic British styling with drop points, flat top point pattern checkering on diamond hand, and a vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend with Anson release has SN in gold on iron. Bore diameter: left -.729, right – .729. Bore restrictions: left – .024 (mod), right – .019 (mod). Wall thickness: left – .032, right – .032. Drop at heel: 2″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Cast: approx 1/2 off. Weight: 7 lbs. 0 oz. LOP: 15-3/8″. Good quality Brady type VC reddish leather case with stitched leather corners is lined in burgundy cloth. Case contains pair of H&H marked snap caps, plated striker bottle with spare strikers, and straps. CONDITION: Excellent, with evidence of very light field use, with a few very minor marks in metal surfaces, and virtually no finish loss. Lacquer on birds has chipped exposing silver which has darkened giving a spotted appearance. Stocks have a number of scattered light handling marks, most notably a few scratches on left side of butt.
