HENRI MATISSE (French, 1869-1954) “VERVE: THE LAST WORKS OF HENRI MATISSE”

Approximately 29 color lithographs as well as black and white lithographs bound in original Verve Summer orange hardcover binding with dust jacket designed by the artist with texts by Pierre Reverdy and Georges Duthuit. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1958.
Note: The book was conceived by the artist as a dedication to the last works he created from 1950-1954. Before his death in 1954, Matisse forbade the reproduction of his recent works. It was his wish that all of the works of this period appear in one volume after his death. The forward of the books states “A volume that could stand as the comprehensive manifestation of this period.” This book is not just another artbook, it is considered Matisse’s final work. Matisse not only designed the cover, he also supervised the printing of the first lithographic plates in 1954. The body of work was published in two editions. First in French number 35/36 of Verve printed by Mourlot Freres, then this American edition in 1958 by Harcourt, Brace and Company in New York SIZE: 14-3/8″ x 10-3/4″ CONDITION: Minor tears to dust jacket.
