ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX COLLECTION.SN 278, 374, 19, 144, 194. 1) ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX. SN 278. Cal. 36. This is a nice example of an early, pre-1845 dragoon pepperbox with “1837” patent dated 6-shot 5″ bbl cluster. This is a nice “as found” example with good patina. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. 2) ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX. SN 374. Cal. 36. This is a nice, honest example of an “ALLEN & THURBER”, about 6″ 6-shot bbl cluster, 10-1/2″ overall with spur trigger guard. Most often referred to as “dragoon size”. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. 3) ALLEN PEPPERBOX. SN 19/144/194. Cal. 31. This group has three, almost relic condition, 6-bbl cluster pepperboxes which all display beautifully. SN 144 still has two loaded chambers. Bbl lengths vary from 3-1/2″ to almost 6″ dragoon. All appear to be Allen patents, though markings only partially discernible. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. CONDITION: 1) Very good overall, metal is overall dark grey/plum with traces of blue, all matching including SNs including grips which are well fit with good ivory patina. 2) Good to very good overall, all matching SNs including grips. Spur on trigger guard is bent upward. Markings all discernible. Metal is overall dark plum/grey with pitting. Grips are well fit with ivory patina. Mechanically fine with smooth clear bores. 3) Fair to good overall. SN 19 and 144 appear “as found”, though SN 144 is missing shroud and trigger bow is loose. The dragoon, SN 194, has one frame screw restored. Ivory grips all fit well with varying ivory patinas. Mechanically, all guns need attention with pitted bores.
