FINE CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER OF LT. MORTIMER HOPKINS, 3RD MICHIGAN CAVALRY.

This sword has the most unusual presentation plate that runs a full 7″ between sword mounts and is inscribed “TO / LIEUT / M.L. HOPKINS / QUARTERMASTER / 3RD MICH CAVALRY / FROM / TIMO EASTMAN / H. PENNOYER / J.W. HOPKINS…….”. An amazing presentation listing 20 different presenters. Lt. Hopkins no doubt had a lot of friends. He enlisted September 7, 1861 at Grand Rapids and was commissioned October 21, 1861 and was mustered out June 1, 1862. Sword is a pattern 1840 cavalry officer’s with engraved pommel and guard with patriotic shield on quillon. 35″ blade has 22″ etched patriotic American panels including motto “UNION AND VICTORY”. CONDITION: Very good overall. Leather grip is intact with triple wire wrap, still retaining orig protective washer. Blade overall is grey/bright with crisp etched panels. Scabbard body retains some orig brown finish, brass mounts and hilt, cleaned with traces of gilt in protected areas and overall a medium mustard patina.
