ROBY MODEL 1850 CIVIL WAR STAFF AND FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD.

This is an honest example of a scarce Christopher Roby marked staff officer’s sword, made in West Chemsford, Massachusetts. The 31″ blade has fancy early Roby etched panels including a most unusual decorated riband reading “PRESERVE THE GOVERNMENT”. Another unusual panel has two doves on fasces with riband reading “INDEPENDENCE”. Other typical patriotic motifs of “US”, flags, eagle with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and an additional flag dated 1861, no doubt the date of manufacture of this sword. CONDITION: Very good overall. Blade is grey overall with staining and pitting, but deep discernible etching. Sharkskin grip has several chips and wear at high areas, complete with twisted copper wire. Blade appears re-peened. Brass hilt and brass scabbard mounts have light mustard patina. Scabbard body is sound and solid with craquelure and crazing, retaining most of its orig polish. 52865-52 JS (600-800) – Lot 3102
