VERY FINE CIVIL WAR AMES FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD OF EDWARD DRAKE, 12TH NEW YORK INFANTRY.

Regulation 1850 foot officer’s sword with 30-1/2″ bright, frosty etched blade with typical American motifs, firm marked “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS”. Top mount is inscribed “MAJOR EDWARD DRAKE / SYRACUSE, NY / 1861-1863”. Drake enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant., April 30, 1861 into Company I, 12th NY Infantry and mustered out June 14, 1863, obviously with several promotions in between. CONDITION: This sword is about as nice “as found” as you will find with complete sharkskin and twisted wire grip. Scabbard mounts and hilt have traces of gilt with an overall medium mustard patina. Blade as noted is very fine, retaining virtually all of its orig luster with only light staining and light scratching. Scabbard body is sound and solid, retaining most of its orig polish with light craquelure. 52865-51 JS (1,000-1,500) – Lot 3090
