ANTEBELLUM AMERICAN EAGLE HEAD MILITIA SWORD.

Interesting variant militia sword with 3-color 29″ straight blade with an eagle with rattlesnake as one panel. Languette has American eagle, Lady Liberty, patriotic shield, circle of stars, panoply of arms and ribbon with “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Each quillon ends in an eagle head and the knuckle bow has a central device of a lion head with terminates into the eagle head pommel. 4-sided grip has two carved fluted bone slabs and two decorated brass plaques on edges. Engraved brass scabbard has American eagle below 17 stars between ring mounts. CONDITION: Very good overall. Blade retains about half its orig blue and gold decoration with areas of staining and pitting. Scabbard has several small bends, dings and dents. Remnants of silver plating are found in protected ares of hilt and scabbard. Bone grip slabs have hand worn patina. 52865-44 JS (1,000-1,500) – Lot 3089
