HIGH GRADE CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION GRADE US STAFF AND FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD WITH FIGURAL RELIEF CAST MOUNTS.

This was a popular and expensive pattern of sword during the Civil War that similar parts have been excavated on battlefields. Sword exhibits a decorated, fluted all metal grip, relief cast pommel with face of Lady Liberty and full relief view of Lady Liberty on top scabbard mount. Cross guard and knuckle bow have floral designs containing a drooped wing American eagle with shield in basket terminating in an eagle head quillon. 31″ blade has American eagle and “US” among its 20″ etched panels. CONDITION: Very good overall. Scabbard body retains much of its orig brown finish, brown hilts and mounts have been cleaned and varnished with only tiny traces of orig gilding shown. 52865-43 JS (3,000-5,000) – Lot 3083
