FINE HIGH GRADE PRESENTATION CIVIL WAR OFFICER’S SWORD OF LT. GEORGE SCHLOENDORFF, 47TH NY, “KILLED IN ACTION” AT PORT WALTHAL, VIRGINIA, MAY 7, 1864.This is a very fine sword with presentation between mounts “PRESENTED TO / LIEUT. GEORGE L SCHLOENDORFF / 47TH REGT NYSV / BY HIS FRIENDS / APRIL 2ND 1864”. This young freshly promoted 2nd Lieutenant would be given this sword and be killed within 40 days of its presentation. The sword was made by the well known Providence, Rhode Island firm of Gorham utilizing a 32″ finely etched and preserved Collins & Company blade with fine patriotic motifs. Grip is decorated spiral silver with fancy triple twisted wire wrap. Raised relief gilded scabbard mounts with patriotic motifs. CONDITION: Fine overall. Blade retains most of its polish and luster with scattered areas of staining and light pitting. Silver plated scabbard is smooth, silver thin in some areas. Scabbard mounts and hilt retain much of their orig gold plating. 52865-42 JS (3,000-5,000) – Lot 3082
