RARE AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE WIDMANN, PHILADELPHIA, EAGLE HEAD POMMEL SWORD, RATTLESNAKE GUARD, GEORGE WASHINGTON LANGUETTES.

This rare, early circa 1825 solid brass gripped officer’s sword has the most unusual features of George Washington’s head in a wreath on either lanquette, rattlesnake in eagles beak forming stirrup hilt guard. Knuckle bow snake’s head rests on a snakes head from the cross guard. Solid brass scabbard is engraved with two up-spread winged eagles and floral decoration. The 31″ straight blade retains much of its luster with firm marking “FW WIDMANN / PHILADELPHIA”. Etched panels include panoply of arms and Federal style eagle with “E Pluribus Unum”. CONDITION: Very good overall. Some orig silver plating can be seen under a very old gold painted surface over entire scabbard, body and hilt. Blade is overall bright/grey with about half orig luster with staining. Scabbard has several light dents and drag has break and 1/2″ x 1/4″ hole on one side. 52865-23 JS (5,000-7,000) – Lot 3072
