TIFFANY GILDED SILVER GENERAL STAFF OFFICER’S SWORD.This is among the highest grade pattern Tiffany sword often seen presented to Colonel’s and General’s with a large lion headed quillon and Roman armor pommel, sheet silver grip with silver wire wrap. Gilded silver scabbard with fine relief mounts and engraved patriotic panels. Verso of scabbard has Tiffany’s ribbon makers mark. The 32″ blade is finely engraved with gold highlights with full standing 3″ high soldier with musket and 4″ high Roman soldier holding guidon along with unusual patriotic American shield and other fine engraved etched panels. Hilt has round central device with superimposed “US” with panoply of arms. This was an expensive sword in its day and still retains a blank presentation panel between ring mounts. CONDITION: Very fine. Sword retains much of its orig gold wash exposing silver where worn below. Blade retains virtually all of its orig luster and shine with light staining and pinprick pitting. The silver grip and twisted wire wrap have a pleasant silver patina. 52865-20 JS (6,000-8,000) – Lot 3069
