WINCHESTER 2ND MODEL 1873 OCTAGON BARREL FULL MAGAZINE RIFLE WITH FACTORY LETTER.

SN 69508. Cal. 44 WCF. 24″ oct bbl, full magazine, standard sporting sights, full blue finish. Straight grain American walnut stocks with crescent buttplate. Bbl shows 2-line Winchester address rolled in front of rear sight. Receiver is of the 2nd Model variety with dust cover rail attached with a screw and exposed trigger pin. Upper tang is marked “MODEL 1873” without finials. SN is engraved on lower tang behind lever latch. Initial “W” appears in wood on the left wrist of buttstock. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter confirming all features and showing shipment on July 13, 1881 to Order Number 26697. PROVENANCE: The collection of Tim Zissler. CONDITION: Very fine as professionally restored. Sights are very good. Bbl marking is sharp. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Bbl retains 80% blue finish with some marring toward muzzle. Magazine shows traces of blue with the balance a silver/grey patina. Receiver shows 90% of restored blue finish. Dust cover retains 30% orig blue with the balance flaked. Loading gate also shows considerable fire blue. Hammer and lever retain a generous amount of case colors that has silvered out on the lever loop. Markings are sharp and clear. Stocks are very good, nearly full size, with an old varnish re-finish. Stocks show light handling marks overall. Buttplate is a silver/grey patina with some stains. Forend cap retains 50% blue finish. Mechanics are crisp. A nice example of an early 2nd Model 73 Winchester that has seen some professional restoration. 52471-2 TEP (4,000-6,000) – Lot 3011
