WINCHESTER 4TH MODEL 1866 RIFLE WITH FACTORY LETTER.

SN 150746. Cal. 44 RF. 24″ rnd bbl, full magazine, blue finish with gunmetal receiver. Straight grain American walnut stocks with steel crescent buttplate. Bbl shows 2-line Winchester address in front of rear sight. Bbl has standard sporting sights. SN is stamped on lower receiver tang behind lever latch. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter addressed to noted dealer Ray Saign stating this rifle was shipped on April 9, 1879 with one other Model 1866 to Order Number 15178; letter erroneously records this rifle as a carbine but also notes the round bbl configuration. This appears to be an error in the entry. PROVENANCE: The collection of Tim Zissler. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl and magazine tube show a smooth plum-brown patina overall with some traces of blue in protected areas. Bbl markings are sharp, sights are very good. Bore is frosty with visible rifling. Receiver has a pleasing mustard brown patina overall with sharp edges and sharp markings. Sling swivel staple holes are filled on the left side, showing that a carbine receiver was used in the manufacture of this rifle. Stocks are very good and only show minor handling marks overall. Stocks are full sized. Crescent butt is a mottled grey-brown patina with roughness at the heel. Forend cap shows a considerable amount of blue. Mechanics are crisp. An opportunity to obtain an example of a late production Model 1866 Winchester. 52471-10 TEP (4,500-7,500) – Lot 3001
