EXTREMELY RARE “DOG HEAD BUTT” HALBACH BRASS BARRELED SINGLE SHOT PISTOL.

NSN. Cal. 48. 13-1/4″ overall, 7-1/2″ 2-stage half-rnd/half-oct bbl. Of all the Federal era Halbach pistols known, only 3 are noted with the Revolutionary War era “dog head” or “dog face” noted on buttcap. This stylized dog head is well known on Revolutionary War era swords, both officer’s and enlisted as the pommel cap. Sam Smith in his text Historical Pistols the American Marital Flintlock 1760-1845 notes only 3 “dog face” butts are known. He illustrates a nearly identical example on pgs 114 & 115. This example, like other two examples, noted, are brass mounted with American walnut stocks, bridled iron pan, convex lock engraved “HALBACH & SONS”, and rounded goose-neck hammer. Most Halbach’s known have flat locks, flat hammers and eagle head butts, so these early dog face butts with earlier characteristics are thought to be his earlier products. This particular example is in exemplary condition. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Silver thumbplate has script initials of owner “LR”. Gun appears orig and complete and well fit.
