MASSIVE FOUR BORE FRENCH DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 4 bore. Massive dbl. with 32″ damascus bbls marked on the top rib “E. LA FAURE BTE A PARIS”. It has deeply scalloped fences with back action locks and hammers that are engraved in light arabesque patterns and also have the makers name and address. The under lever is also lightly engraved and marked “W.R.A.CO”. Trigger guard has a long lower tang that is also lightly engraved. It is mounted in a 1-pc wood stock with articulated forearm secured with a single wedge. The bottom of the bbls are marked “LEOPOLD BERNARD/CANNONIER A PARIS” and the water table of the receiver is marked with the makers name and serial number. Stamped in the ramrod channel between the bbls is a number and the date 1869. Accompanied by two brass 4ga. empty hulls 4″ long and marked Winchester No 4. This shotgun came from the Winchester Museum and was apparently used at Winchester for testing their 4ga ammunition. It is further accompanied by a letter dated June 25th 1994 from Herbert G. Houze of Cody, Wyoming completely describing this gun and with an appraisal value of $12,000. SN 700. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Bbls retain about 90% brown damascus pattern. Receiver and lock plates retain case colors in sheltered areas, brilliant around the fences with the balance turned silver. Wood is sound and retains most of an old restored finish. Bright shiny bores. The extractor mechanism appears to be missing, although the extractor is present. 4-46787 JR187 (5,000-10,000)
